Trees...within a shell...

Trees

within a shell as weary and wizened as yours

as streaked with the rain's tears

split by the coming and going of

summer and winter

gouged by the ravages of insect

and illness

my heartwood expands

each ring a story

each layer a weight

that roots me more firmly

to this spot

no longer bearing fruit

but rather tidings

admonishments

which is what old things do

I stand much as you

biding what time is left me

fade into a landscape

of new things new dreams

and whatever else

a new generation reaches for

that has nothing to do with stars

or sunlight or moons

etched with the shadows of branches

and leaves that burst forth in spring

singing a green song

a song without words

that I play

over and over again

even in sleep

Trees...for weeks now you've waited...

Trees

for weeks now
you've waited
buds filled to bursting
redder now as the day's song
grows louder
as light creeps in
between your sepals
tufted gems
opening slowly
imperceptibly
but surely
upon the branch
Maple you are called
whose elixir
fuels spring's passion
sweetens both bread
and air
tempers the shift
before settling once more
in your sapwood
crimson puffs
on dainty twigs
fit for phoebes
and wrens
swaying in a
pond-rippling breeze
warm enough now
for violas and other posies
for your birth on the bough
as that of stars

Trees...you are the earth's stole...

Trees

you are the earth's stole
draped about her shoulders
as drunk on moonshine
or sun-crazed
she points and pirouettes
through the void
her heart
filled to bursting

she wears you well
tucks you in here
demurely
drapes you there
seductively
but always with grace
with good taste
never out of fashion

and then
at night
the gilded chariots gone
the blue song stilled
the sea floor cleared
she
pulls you in tight
against the chill
against icy stars
falling about her
catching in you
making of you

Trees...I am back...

TREES...

...I am back once more among you.
You, never doubting for one moment
and I, never quite as sure
of ever wending my way again
between your sheltering arms.
Wanderer, I, stopping often
to rest among your kind
never overstaying my welcome
fearing another farewell
unmindful that more of you await me
yet clinging to a grasp
that is never wise of me to ease from.
Now we look together
across a great blue eye
that shines in the moonlight
clings to stars ere day is come,
one of you bent and crippled
yet touching the water
as might a young girl
on a late autumn day,
rippling its surface with her hand.
