Trees...you sing the same song

Trees

you sing the same song

no matter where you are

sending it on the wind

and on birds' wings

tucking it into the soul

of whatever walks beneath you

soft as sighs

loud as howls

ever original

ever yours

and whoever deigns to hear

your dirge or lament

your reverant chants

nocturnal chorus

whispers at dawn

you sing the same song

no matter where I am

assumed and redeposited

elsewhere

miles from where I began

as long as you are there

I am where I need to be

I am home

Trees...for weeks now you've waited...

Trees

for weeks now
you've waited
buds filled to bursting
redder now as the day's song
grows louder
as light creeps in
between your sepals
tufted gems
opening slowly
imperceptibly
but surely
upon the branch
Maple you are called
whose elixir
fuels spring's passion
sweetens both bread
and air
tempers the shift
before settling once more
in your sapwood
crimson puffs
on dainty twigs
fit for phoebes
and wrens
swaying in a
pond-rippling breeze
warm enough now
for violas and other posies
for your birth on the bough
as that of stars

Trees...you are the earth's stole...

Trees

you are the earth's stole
draped about her shoulders
as drunk on moonshine
or sun-crazed
she points and pirouettes
through the void
her heart
filled to bursting

she wears you well
tucks you in here
demurely
drapes you there
seductively
but always with grace
with good taste
never out of fashion

and then
at night
the gilded chariots gone
the blue song stilled
the sea floor cleared
she
pulls you in tight
against the chill
against icy stars
falling about her
catching in you
making of you

Trees...how little we know...

Trees

how little we

know

of what you do

how few

the thanks

we offer you

as we pass

oblivious

to the coolness

in your deeper parts

that costs nothing

but is everything

to those of us

who need the

air you clean

the water

to quench

our children's thirst

to banish winter

bring us through

spring

and summer

to that place

of color

as you ease into

fullness

as green gives way

to crimson

yellow

gold

as your hunger wanes

and you look

toward your

long rest

when your song

will soften

to a whisper
