Trees...it's as if you all pulled up stakes...

Trees...

....it's as if you all pulled up stakes
and followed me here
always knowing where to find me
where you
or your kin
continue to assure me
that my days will never
lack you
that my love for you
has not gone unnoticed.

Still now after all this time
after seeing your now abandoned
spots the vast swaths of ground
where you once stood
desecrated
bare now
empty of you
of your lush
majestic and sage
presences.

But then I slip out of bed
and there you are outside my window
beckoning like some playful friend
eager to commiserate here
of all places
where to others
to those who think
that fewer of you would be
preferable
just something
to be taken down
that more light is better
and that some of you
lean just a little too far
for comfort.

Your topmost leaves
tremble in the late-summer breeze
fill the large gap
that my leaving you
not once but twice
created but how silly of me
to fret for even just a moment
that you aren't capable of this
of healing this wound
of once again
filling my days.

Trees...beyond you...

Trees

beyond you lies another world
that deals in things that have nothing
to do with tenacity and perseverance
patience and fortitude but with fear
of failure to rise above the pettiness
the mundane and the mediocre

do you feel fear is that what
I hear at night when the wind blows
so hard that I think you will fall over
finally come crashing down against
your green wills and lie waiting for
the decomposers to claim you

is that you howling through the
shadows boughs bending in all
directions at the whim of the thing
greater than you that has you in its
grip and won't relent until it is
satisfied that it has bent you

beaten you into submission.
Imagine my awe as the light
builds and there you are again
almost magically my faith restored
in my living fortress my barricade
against what can only diminish me.

Trees...for weeks now you've waited...

Trees

for weeks now
you've waited
buds filled to bursting
redder now as the day's song
grows louder
as light creeps in
between your sepals
tufted gems
opening slowly
imperceptibly
but surely
upon the branch
Maple you are called
whose elixir
fuels spring's passion
sweetens both bread
and air
tempers the shift
before settling once more
in your sapwood
crimson puffs
on dainty twigs
fit for phoebes
and wrens
swaying in a
pond-rippling breeze
warm enough now
for violas and other posies
for your birth on the bough
as that of stars

Trees...you are patient as saints...

Trees

you are patient

as saints

perseverant

valiant

beneath your burdens

of snow

bending at the wind's will

and other times

still straight

and inscrutable

as a thought

that never found voice

never saw the light of day

but you
who have seen many days
and much light
many nights stars moons

that shone on ancient deeds
and things
no longer remembered
bore it all
locked it away in rings
that multiplied each year
how many springs
unto old age

long you wait

and persevere

and with what

quick stroke

will you end

in what dim light

be borne

beneath

the very snows

you carried

uncomplaining

in your laden arms

etchings

against a winter sky

Trees...you are me...

Trees

                             you are me

and I am you

in so many

senses of the words

that I forget

sometimes

that I am not

like you

bound to a

single spot

resigned

to your entrapment

nor are you

like me

able to flee

from danger

the sound of saws

or of tiny jaws

consuming you

slowly

or toppling you

where we are

most alike

is in our words

stating simply

that blood

sap sunlight

rain

it's all the same

that without them

we die

we cease to blush

as the light

turns from us

we shed

leaves

and bad choices

then wait

till we are

green again

Trees....what words to use...

Trees

What words to use
to give you substance
on the page,
what amalgam of letters
to best convey your color?

I sit beneath you,
made small
by your untiring presence
and cannot hold a candle
to how you shatter the light
into billions
of gold and fiery bits
that linger but a second
before the sun changes its mind.

And when I leave,
I leave annoyed
that all that come to me
are words like beautiful
and peaceful
when what I want to say
is that I die a little
each time
you wrap
yourselves
around
me.

Trees...now that the rain...

Trees

                                                                now that the rain
has had its way
with you
and washed you clean
you put the jeweler to shame
with your brilliance
for no emerald
sings the way your leaves sing
no cut glass
splits the light
as do your eyes that have looked
upon us these many years now
stumbling across your roots
where you began
where you continue
for
what need have we
of anything beyond you
you who though old
are ever young
alive in your transpiration
blessing young ones
springing from
the earth at your feet
your legacy
among the grass
that aspires to your
