 Tree

...I saw you fall

fulfilling my prophecy

making me wish

I’d never written the words.

Piece by piece

leaf by leaf

they dismembered you

sliced your past from you

letting it fall

to the ground

where apart

it meant nothing

and meant everything.

The birds you’d sheltered

took flight

at the first cut

while others dared

to light upon

what was left of you

before it was too late.

Now there is

nothing

where you were

but the dust

from which you sprang

a century ago

no words to tell of you

but mine.

Trees....it's that time again...

...it's that time again in a place
called August that is not quite sure
who it is or where it wants to be

with summer that has already begun
taking on the tinge of memory again?
with fall the season of visual overload
and angst at what lies ahead?

stay with me here awhile as we ponder
this development that crept up on us
when we weren't looking that went the way
of muggy nights and steamy days when
even the birds were silent and the moon
strained toward its usual intensity
moody as it slipped in and out from behind
mists it never ordered

soon it will all change again and i'll behold
you all in your autumn splendor brief interlude
before the real fall
before the sentence ends

Tree...I mourn your passing...

Tree

I mourn your passing
urged on by dirges
wailed by saws
and other human
devices
that sent slices of you
to the earth
that waits
knowing it all ends there
where all is made swift work of
where more of you reside

Birds fled
clouds parted
each blade of grass bowed its head
and I stood
my spirit spent at
your demise not written anywhere
but on my soul
